If you’re not already selling millions of dollars online, you’re not ready for Etail. Etail is designed for high volume sellers. These top sellers manage their products and listings across eBay, Amazon and multiple other sales channels. Here’s how they keep everything coordinated.

The Etail Platform was purpose-built to meet the “volume-induced pain” felt by medium-to-large online sellers.

These sellers realized the key to success was to automate their eBay business, then expand it to Amazon, Walmart and other marketplaces, offer the products on their own websites, or target specialty sites like Overstock.com or Groupon.

As a successful eBay seller, you know the importance of listings. Listing are the potential buyer’s window into your business. It’s how they decide to buy from you versus their other alternatives – including doing nothing.

But as eBay sellers expand to other channels, a new problem becomes clear: no two channels are alike in terms of their listing requirements. In fact, the only thing all the channels have in common are stiff penalties – including suspension – for violating their listing policies.

Compound the problem by taking generating listings for hundreds, thousands or even millions of items in some Etail eBay seller’s product catalogs. Done right, multichannel listing is a formula for success and a competitive advantage others can’t match. Done wrong and it is a recipe for disaster.

Etail addresses the multichannel listing issue using integration and automation, made possible by a fundamental component of the Etail platform design architecture: the single point of truth.

There are three components basic to any online ecommerce listing:

  1. Static listing content: This is content that doesn’t change anytime the listing is shown such as product description, photography, dimensions, shipping weight etc.
  2. Variable listing content: This is content that might change each time the listing is shown. Price is the most common example as automated repricers adjust listed prices to remain competitive or, in Etail’s case, also reflect fulfillment costs. Inventory availability is also a common piece of variable content as inventory availability is published or the listing pulled down if no inventory is available.
  3. Taxonomy: These are the specific requirements that each individual marketplace has for listing content and formats. Managing static and variable listing data across multiple channels would be a snap if the same listing and content format could be used on all channels. Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. Every channel has its own taxonomy requirements and they change often.

Here’s how Etail’s the problem of coordinating your eBay listing across all listing on other channels.

Etail actually divides listing content into two data records: A Master SKU and a Listing SKU.

For example, let’s say you have a product that you list in various pack outs across four sales channels listings:

  1. A single unit listing on Amazon
  2. A 4-pack listing on eBay
  3. A 4-pack listing on eBay
  4. A 6-pack listing on your website

The Master SKU contains inventory and cost information at the most basic configuration for the product – in this case (and most cases) the single unit since all the other listings are multiple of this single unit.

For example, let’s say you have sixty units in stock. Here’s how the listings will look:

Listing Unit of Measure Published Quantity
Amazon 1 unit 60
Amazon 4-pack 15
eBay 4-pack 15
Your Site 6-pack 10

Now let’s say you sold one 4-pack on eBay, here’s what your listings look like now across your channel.

Listing Unit of Measure Published Quantity
Amazon 1 unit 56
Amazon 4-pack 14
eBay 4-pack 14
Your Site 6-pack 9

You’ll note that the 6-pack availability is 9 (9 x 6 units = 54 units). The 56 units in stock would only allow you to sell nine six-packs.  By using the Master SKU to control inventory availability, you can share inventory quantities across multiple channels and multiple listing SKUs. There is no need to split up inventory quantities or pre-allocate inventory to channels or SKUs.  When you sell on any channel, all channel listings are updated so you can’t over sell. You can also set up rules based on safety stock, supplier fill time and other factors to further ensure you won’t stock out.

The other piece of variable data in a listing is the price. Etail is unique in that its pricing engine is based on the cost of the individual Master SKU. When a listing is shown, Etail will calculate the listing price based on the most recent costs and whatever strategy and rules you set. So your margins are protected if costs change.

But each listing also has unique quantities, images, weights, descriptions and other static data items. Once set up, this information does not change for a specific configuration. This data is stored in the Listing SKU.

So to create a listing, Etail is pulling variable information such as inventory availability and price/cost from the Master SKU and combining it with static information from the Listing SKU – calculating adjustments based on the unit of measure for the listing.

But notice that we have a 4-pack listed on Amazon and a 4-pack listed on eBay. Each channel has very different taxonomies for how the listing is formatted and the data it contains. You probably also have different pricing for the two listings – if only because the fees or fulfillment method is different. Etail will automatically map the information contained in the Listing SKU to the correct taxonomy for the channel and adjusts the price shown based on your pricing strategy for each channel.
